 Floor leveling

Floor leveling

Self-levelling floors and levelling mixes are dry construction mixes for non shrinkable floors of accommodation and commercial properties, suitable for making super solid, long lasting floor screed and creating industrial polymer and polyurethane floors. The purpose of these materials is to level the floor surface prior to laying tiles, laminate, linoleum, parquet… Practically speaking prior to any sort of floor cover. To choose the right type of floor levelling or screed mix, it is necessary to determine the difference in levels, compatibility of the dry mix with the type of further cover material, the area of work and necessary timeframe. You also need to find out if there are any additional requirements towards the dry mix material. But first of all, let us discuss the difference between levelling, screeds and self-levelling floors. Some information regarding this, as well as information about technological process and necessary tools is given below…

TIE-ROD-I

Flooring, self-leveling floor on video (comments will be in Russian)

The main task of levelling mix or screed mix is to provide a quality substance for fixing of substantial unevenness of the floor and formation of the main carrier layer. Floor levelling mixes do not have complete properties of self-levelling floors. Therefore levelling or repair of floor surfaces is always made with the help of markers. That will increase your time of working on the floor, but bearing in mind what sort of floor unevenness you can come across in some new houses, it is better to start with the floor levelling first. Besides, prices of floor levelling mixes are less than prices of self-levelling floors. Even if the layer of a self-levelling floor can allow you to fix the floor unevenness (for example, IVSIL TIE-ROD-III), taking into account cheaper price of a floor levelling mix, it is better to use it first. But of course, the final choice of floor mix is up to you! Due to the fact that floor levelling mixes provide only prime rough levelling of the floor, it is recommended to tile the surface as a final cover. First of all, because creating a proper horizontal surface level depends entirely on the skills of the person fulfilling the job and on the accuracy of markers' installation. Secondly, these mixes are not final finishing-off materials for floors and they do not `provide such smooth surface as self-levelling floors do. And thirdly, no matter how good is levelling or screed mix, when in thick layer, it will have at least a minimum shrink and that will produce an effect on the final result. All these drawbacks can be levelled (literally speaking) by poured and self-levelled floors.

A few words about the main difference between levelling floor mixes and plain sand-cement screed or sand-concrete screed. Due to their composition, levelling floor mixes are definitely more movable than plain sand-cement screed or sand-concrete screed and they do not require substantial physical efforts whilst working with them. Besides reliable IVSIL floor levelling mix provides formation of the surface without cracks, it is easy to work with, you will need less quantity of it and it does not need any additives for increase of elasticity or solidity. With IVSIL mixes, even if you are only a beginner, and even with little skills, providing you follow the instructions, you will be able to level the floors in your house (apartment, village cottage).

Now we will discuss self-levelling poured floors. Their purpose is to create a perfectly levelled smooth floor surface in your house, office or village cottage. These dry mixes are characterised by maximum mobility of the dissolved mixture due to their charcteristical feature of self-levelling. Their name «self-levelling floors» speaks for itself. Technology of creating these floors is called «pouring of floors». The point is that after these dry mixes are dissolved in water and turn into a liquid mixture, they are poured onto the surface. Self-levelling characteristics of the mix allow it to level and fill in all uneven places under the effect of gravitation. The benefit of self-levelling technology is that even a beginner, whilst working with this material, can easily achieve a good result of levelling the floors in his apartment, in a bathroom, kitchen or sitting-room. And the same applies to professionals working on floor levelling in a big shopping centre or in a multi-storied building and applying these mixtures manually or by machines. Apart from being easy to work with, self-levelling floors are more refined materials for floors. After pouring, these floors form a smooth perfect surface with glossy finish, which allows to lay any finishing materials over it. Including thin soft carpets, carpetlin and linoleum. Smooth even structure of finished floor is ideal for further cover with parquet or laminated boards. And of course, laying tiles over it is nothing but a pleasure!

In order to make sure that you will not need to come back to the shop after you have bought the floor mix, we would like to give some information referring technological process and tools that you will require for working with floor screed mixes or self-levelling floors.

The most frequently asked question is where to get markers? The easiest solution is to use plain wooden bars, metal profile or even pipes of the suitable size. Another way to make markers is based on the principle «everything is handy» – you can make markers out of fast hardening floor levelling mix IVSIL EXPRESS BASIS from the «Fast repair» line. As soon as it has hardened (in 3 hours only) you can start the main levelling of the floor.

You will need the following tools to screed or to level the floor: a special mixer drill for stirring the mixture; damper film to be laid along the perimeter, wooden stick 1,2 – 1,5 m for the main levelling of the mixture and metal trowel for smoothing the surface. You will also need a level, at least half meter length for installation of markers.

You do not need markers for self-levelling floors, except those rare cases when the layer is going to be very thick or you are working on large areas. For work with self-levelling floors you will also need a mixer drill, wooden stick or special rubber lath (to help the mixture to flow along the floor in thin layer) and a special roll with needles for self-levelling floors. You will have to roll it along freshly poured mixture in order to release air bubbles, which were created whilst the mix was stirred. It is understandable that you will not need a level for making self-levelling floor, of course.

It is very important to remember that technology of application of self-levelling floors requires to pour them over prime coating. Therefore do not forget to visit the section «Primers» in the shop. We recommend special primer for floors IVSIL TIE-ROD.

Talking about main characteristics, properties and specific features of self-levelling floors, apart from mentioned above, we should also pay attention to such parameters as thickness of application, frost resistance (or suitability for using out of doors or in cold premises), hardness of the self-levelling floor or screed and time required for fastening. This is the information which will help a consumer to choose the right self-levelling mix or levelling mix for certain conditions of use. Another important technical characteristic is a mix’s ability to flow and spread evenly, which is not often mentioned on the package, but it plays an important role of a distinct standard, which can distinguish between self-levelling floors, levelling mixes and screed mixes. To avoid a mistake of buying a plain screed mix sold as self levelling floor (unfortunately that can happen), it is recommended to pay attention at compliance of the mix with the specification of State Standard and Control Department 31358-2007 for «dry floor mixes cement based».

IVSIL offers six types of self-levelling floors and levelling mixes. Our line of products in this section covers most of possible requirements of different consumers.
