... - First of all, primers decrease absorption level of the basis, they do not allow moist to drain out of the mixture before due time, which provides even, steady process of drying for levelling or repair mixture.
- Secondly, even after a thorough cleaning and brushing of a wall or floor surface, there are small particles and dust on it. When the surface is coated with primer mixture, those particles are tied and it leads to a better bond of floor mixes, plaster, adhesive and a surface.
- Thirdly, small particles of primers (especially acrylic) penetrate micro-cracks of the basis much deeper than particles of dry mixes, fill them in and make the basis harder. This is especially important when working with porous, friable, light and not stable basis foam-concrete, gas-concrete, foam-blocks, breezeblocks, silicate blocks, prime coating in old buildings and working with old worn out basis surfaces.
We will discuss later how to choose the right primer mix depending on the type of further cover, (plaster, paint or wall paper). Bearing in mind that primers, first of all interact with a surface of a basis, we need to evaluate this basis in order to choose the right primer.
If the surface is standard, it is sufficient to read the instruction in order to choose the right type of a primer. If it is difficult for you to evaluate the state of the surface, you would be better to ask for a professional advice. But we will try to help you in this evaluation. There are several reasons why you may need to buy a special composition of a primer. One of them is when the basis is made of solid substances or has a solid surface: concrete, tiles, painted cover. In this case you will need a special primer with high adhesion level or special primers for concrete contact like IVSIL BASIS-Concrete. Due to the rough surface structure, such bonding mixes provide better adhesion of the material to the smooth solid basis. Another case is old, porous and friable surface, which needs bonding, hardening primer. The most popular ones are acrylic primers of deep penetration. Such primers are used for treatment of all types of porous basis and porous concretes, light and insulation decorative and construction materials, which all are characterised by a high level of absorption. Deep penetration of primers particles into such basis provides the necessary hardness and absorption capability for further covering by any construction mixes or other decorative materials.
If the job has to be done in the high humidity conditions, you should also pay attention to the content of the mix composition to make sure that there antibacterial and antifungal additives included. If the level of humidity is very high, you will need to use special antiseptic mixture. It will help to avoid formation of fungi and mould in the places where basis contacts decorative materials. That will in turn provide long life for decoration materials and will help to avoid specific unpleasant smell, which may occur in such places otherwise.
When you work with primers, as with any other construction materials, you should also pay attention to certain factors whilst applying primers on the outside walls prior to application of further materials or working in unheated premises. The term «frost resistant primer» is a bit different to «frost resistant» dry mix. Bearing in mind, that a primer is a ready made liquid product, «frost resistant» means that it freezes at lower temperatures or can completely recover its characteristics after defrosting or even several cycles of freezing-defrosting. It is a risk of freezing that may create some problems for storing and transportation for most types of ready made primer products. The rest is easier.
Names of some primers, indicate the purpose of their application, such as primers for plaster, for putty or tile adhesive. But it does not mean very much. Most of primers are multipurpose. But one should be very attentive, when choosing primers for floor or primers for further application of wallpaper. In the first case, characteristics of primers are really critical, because flooring materials (floor screed and levelling mixes, self-levelling floors) always work together with primers. Therefore in order to achieve a perfect result of flooring works, we recommend to buy materials of the same producer. In the case of primers for treatment of the walls under wallpaper, make sure that a primer you choose can be used under heavy vinyl or fliselyn wallpaper.
We recommend to work with primers of known manufacturers. Those, whose products are reliable and quality of dry mixes is guaranteed. Very often it is primers bad quality, which may result in falling wallpaper off the walls, not talking about disastrous effects of bad quality primer for application under tiles, plaster, putty or self-levelling floors. Therefore before to work with dry mixes, do not forget to treat the surface with a good primer! Even though primer treatment may not seem important to you, it seriously effects the final result of dry mix materials application! Taking into account the fact that quantity of required primer is not high (usually 100 200 ml per square meter) and prices of most of IVSIL latex and acrylic primers are low, treatment of surface with a primer will not make a big difference to the cost your construction/repair work.
Most of IVSIL primers are also rapid-drying (a layer of latex primer dries in 30-40 minutes), thanks to that, the time of your repair work is not going to be much increased. Another typical use of primers is adding them into cement and concrete mixtures. Some multipurpose primers (for example latex IVSIL BASIS or FOUNDATION), are recommended for use as additives into plain sand-cement mixes to increase their hardness, elasticity and easiness to work with.
Other special types of primer-additives may add special unique characteristics to the construction mixture. For example, frost resistant additives like IVSIL Frost Resistant. Such additives to cement or concrete mixture will allow to use the materials in winter in low temperature conditions.
Technology of primer application is simple and does not require special deep knowledge or skills of construction work. You can watch a video referring this process at the tile adhesives or flooring pages. In both cases treatment of the surface with a primer is done in the same manner. Primer mixture is applied to the surface with the help of a roller or a brush and the chose of a tool depends on the surface condition. For example, it is better to use a brush when applying primer mix over a brickwork, a roll can be used over more even surfaces. If you need to treat a big area with a primer mix, it makes sense to use special primers spraying equipment, primer pistol or paint sprayer which is suitable for liquid latex and acrylic primers.
Some more information referring IVSIL primers: our company offers six different types of latex and acrylic primers and IVSIL additives for different types of work and types of basis surface:
